I am no expert on this as I have only had ITP for three months, but I say as long as you want to and have the energy to then why not. Just use common sense dont do anything crazy!! In the begining I was nervous about this too, but im actually more nervous about getting pregnant then having a bleeding problem. However the prednisone killed my libido so I didnt have to worry too much! And then the prednisone wrecked my body so much that physically I couldn't do anything! I say we have managed to have some time together twice a month, not that great for a young couple!!! Best of luck for you and be cautious!!!

I would think you'd be safe with a count of 36. To be sure, check with your doctor.

As I said, check with your doctor, but it never occurred to me to not have sex with low counts.

I bleed during sex even with high counts - go slowly and see what you can and can't cope with. Don't get too naughty! :P

ugh so the worst thing happened this weekend for me, okay maybe I am being a bit dramatic, but I was having "romance" and I bled, pretty bad. That has never happened before. I have been flaring, and the lowest my counts have been this time around was 35,000 no big deal. I had bloodwork done on Wednesday and called on Friday, but results not in.... so I was hoping that I was okay... so on Sunday morning my boyfriend and I tried and half way through he was like baby, you are bleeding,,,, seriously I was mortified... so we stopped clean ourselves up and don't you know I didn't bleed the rest of the day. Anyways, thank God he is so understanding, I wouldn't officially start dating him until my Rituxan treatments back in 2009. Anyhoo... I truly hate ITP and it is messing with my "romance" :) Hopefully I will find out what my counts are today. ugh!!!!

Kasha
MCTD (Lupus/Raynauds), Sjogrens, ITP
Plaquenil 400 mgs
Prednisone 10 mgs
Imuran 50 mgs
Rituxan 2005 and 2008 (can't take anymore, body rejected it)

I am so glad I found this post. I am 34 years old with two daughters. On Thursday, I had my bi-monthly CBC drawn (for an upcoming PariAcetabularOsteotomy , or PAO, scheduled for November of this year) and my count was 44. Not horribly low, but low enough. On Friday, my husband and I were "intimate" and I woke up yesterday morning in a horrible mess! I slept right through the night not having a clue that I was experiencing heavy bleeding. We are going on 48 hours and it still hasn't stopped. It is not as heavy as Saturday morning but I am still worried. I was diagnosed in January of 2011 and this has never happened before from being intimate. I have had rituxin, bone marrow biopsy, ivig (with an aseptic meningitis reaction), platelet transfusion, prednisone, hysterectomy, oopherectomy, vaginectomy, and an appendectomy all since then. Anyway, was wondering how long does the bleeding last after being intimate? My doctors are throught he Mayo clinic in Minnesota and of course closed on the weekends. I also am experiencing a throbbing headache and a heavy feeling in my kidneys. I don't know how else to explain that. I guess I am just worried. Anyone?

I would think there might be a separate problem going on besides ITP. There has to be some explanation for the bleeding other than just low counts (which could contribute but not be the main cause). I'd call your doctor tomorrow, maybe GYN or GP.

Since I no longer have a uterus or ovaries, and had a partial vaginectomy (all due to stage IV endometriosis- and all done in the last year) my guess was the bleeding was from an abrasion during the intimacy and a complication of low counts. I am planning on calling the hematologist tomorrow but just wondered if any one else has bled for this long afterward. I am pretty confident that there are no reproductive related issues going on as there is nothing there to become a problem anymore. Thank you for your reply sandi, I appreciate it. I don't feel so alone knowing others are going through the same thing. :)

Rainlyn, I think it's really cute that you type your giggles! I was diagnosed right after I got married- in sickness and in health took on a whole new meaning. Suffice it to say, bunny rabbits with low platelets can still have 'romance' (as long as ok with doctor)... ;)
