Somehow, I've managed to avoid the flu for 53 years without ever having a flu shot. I am truly on the fence regarding efficacy of flu shots because it's just a guessing game as far as the predicted strains. Not getting the flu isn't proof of efficacy since many people do not get the vaccine and still avoid getting the flu (Me, so far).

This, from the CDC, is not enough to convince me to be injected with thimerosal, formaldehyde, sodium deoxycholate, egg proteins, and phosphate buffer.

Can I get vaccinated and still get the flu?

Yes. It’s possible to get sick with the flu even if you have been vaccinated (although you won’t know for sure unless you get a flu test). This is possible for the following reasons:

You may be exposed to a flu virus shortly before getting vaccinated or during the period that it takes the body to gain protection after getting vaccinated. This exposure may result in you becoming ill with flu before the vaccine begins to protect you. (About 2 weeks after vaccination, antibodies that provide protection develop in the body.)

You may be exposed to a flu virus that is not included in the seasonal flu vaccine. There are many different flu viruses that circulate every year. The flu vaccine is made to protect against the three or four flu viruses that research suggests will be most common.

Unfortunately, some people can become infected with a flu virus the flu vaccine is designed to protect against, despite getting vaccinated. Protection provided by flu vaccination can vary widely, based in part on health and age factors of the person getting vaccinated. In general, the flu vaccine works best among healthy younger adults and older children. Some older people and people with certain chronic illnesses may develop less immunity after vaccination. Flu vaccination is not a perfect tool, but it is the best way to protect against flu infection.

The following additional adverse reactions have been reported with use of the marketed vaccine. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to a vaccine exposure.

The same would also apply to every drug side effect out there, yet we tend to heavily rely on that information.

That was my point Sandi - ANY side effect reported, if only one (1) time, has to be put in the list of nasty vile evil deadly side effects for drugs and immunizations whether it is known or not if the drug or immunizations caused it. And I guess that is why it bugs me you have picked on vaccinations. Did you really read what I had posted?

Melinda - I'm not picking on vaccines. I'm trying to raise awareness about the dangers of vaccines. As I've said before, I think the initial intentions were good, but they have gotten out of hand. The actual logic behind some of the vaccines is absurd. Notice that I said 'some'. It's a multi-trillion dollar industry and it raises my red flag when they keep pushing more on kids because obviously the more they sell, the more they make. There is a direct correlation between the rise in number of vaccines and neurological problems in children (and adults). When you take a drug, there is usually proof that it works. BP goes down, platelet counts go up, infection goes away. When you get a vaccine, there is no proof that it works other than the fact that you didn't get that particular illness. You might not have gotten it anyway.

I haven't read the package inserts for all vaccines, but the ones I have read stated that you can still get the illness that you were just vaccinated against. Pretty convenient statement. Safety studies for vaccines are no where near as thorough as safety studies for drugs. That is one of the things that people are asking for and they won't do it. Studies are conducted by the vaccine manufacturers themselves, and they are also not liable for any harm that a vaccine might cause. If they are so safe, why can't they be sued? Millions of dollars are paid out by the Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund which is a special court and the manufacturer's are not involved. The money is raised by adding a cost to each vaccine and it goes into the fund. Nice, no liability. Drug manufacturer's are held to a much different standard. Why?

Mercury is undeniably a toxic substance, especially when injected into the body. That shouldn't be hard to believe. When it reaches the brain, it can cause inflammation that can cause fevers, seizures and neurological damage. The damage can range from Guiallan Barre', ADHD, autism, demyelination, or any one of a thousand different disorders. But it's only a little bit, right? A little bit of mercury is okay, especially when you keep getting vaccines and it accumulates.

I can guarantee that drug side effects are very under reported. I know that my doctor didn't report my reaction to Rituxan and my GP didn't report my Achilles Tendonitis from an antibiotic. The same goes for vaccine reactions. It is so easy to deny that a reaction exists unless it's already listed. I highly doubt that side effects are being reported and listed for vaccines. They can list whatever they want. I've read story after story of mothers who have taken their very ill babies to the ER hours after a vaccine and the doctor says it's unrelated. They totally blow them off. Why isn't anyone listening to the parents?

All of these 'idiopathic' disorders going on and we don't question it? I'm talking about serious, chronic problems here. Most people will read the side effects of a drug before they take it. Not so with vaccines. No one looks at the package insert and just assumes it is safe. There are some pretty serious side effects listed but no one gives it a second thought. You're assuming a huge risk in exchange for something that might not ever happen, and sometimes you can still get whatever the vaccine was supposed to protect you from.

I never said that people should not get vaccines. I'm saying that there is a risk that is largely downplayed. I'm saying that vaccine adjuvants accumulate and the damage may not be seen for years. It's worth it to weigh benefit vs risk for every vaccine that you get. It's to your advantage to research it and read the bad stories. You would if it were a drug.

Sandy, it also took at least two days for the doctor's to diagnose Lisa with Gillian Barre. She is still in ICU after two weeks and cannot breathe on her on. I think this is one of the worst illnesses I have ever heard of--seeing what she is going through. I, too, have read that sometimes they are on a breathing tub for six months of longer (paralyzed). It is very rare and also falls under the immune illnesses.

It is clear that viral illnesses cause a wide variety of problems, not limited to the obvious problems, including death, but including seemingly unrelated problems, such as autoimmune reactions.

It is clear that vaccinations have unintended consequences, including autoimmune reactions, and sometimes death.

Most people who argue on the topic of vaccinations argue just one side or the other of the argument, ignoring the other side.

The issue is not whether there are benefits or risks of using vaccines, or benefits or risks of NOT using them, but whether the benefits outweigh the risks.

There are two ways of assessing risk vs. benefit: from the point of view of the individual and from the point of society as a whole. One person's use of flu vaccine might keep another unvaccinated person from being exposed to the flu.

If you are not comparing risk versus benefit - quantitatively - then you will not convince anyone of anything.

Tamar, last year my doctor advised me to wait until at least October to get the shot in order for it to be at full strength during the heaviest flu season. I got one at the fair a few years back but I think I'll wait as he suggested. Erica

I just want everyone on this forum with ITP to very careful as I was bitten by a mosquito the last time I had my bout with ITP. DeeDee Marie I can't imagine why it wouldn't be ok to post that link. It is very frightening - Zika and West Nile. I don't put water in the bird baths when it's mosquito season, I turn them upside down so even rain or sprinkler water can't get in them. Thank you for the link - I didn't know GB was a possibility if one got Zika.

I take Women's One-a-Day vitamin just for this purpose. I'm one of the Magnets, too. It might help you son. Can either take it in a Vitamin B supplement. For some reason, On the One-A-Day Women's vitamins work for me. I've tried other brands and I still get bitten by mosquitos and gnats!

Sandi, I really don't understand. Here you are, and you DID have a nasty reaction to rituxan that you've never recovered from, but you softpedal that and are really quite strident when it comes to vaccines, which, as far as I can tell, you haven't been harmed by. Even though this is an ITP board and the information about the danger from rituxan is arguably more relevant.

I don't soft pedal my reaction to Rituxan. I tell the story whenever necessary and have told it often. Personally, I will never go near a biologic again, but I don't think it would be in the best interest of this group to push that agenda. I consistently point out that Rituxan is a toxic drug and the decision to use it should not be made lightly. I understand that there are people who need to treat and would never discourage treatment due to my personal beliefs. I ask people to weigh the pros and cons and consider all options, even watching and waiting. I'm not even discouraging vaccines here, just pointing out the possible complications. Just the other day I suggested to a person without a spleen that receiving vaccines is important. I have always advocated that.

My point in sharing this information about vaccines is to bring awareness to the fact that there are contributing factors to autoimmunity. I have not personally been harmed due to vaccines, but I believe that my daughter was. She was diagnosed with Graves Disease shortly after receiving the Hep B vaccine. I know, causation vs correlation, the argument can go on forever. However, the fact that vaccines are a known cause of ITP should open up the possibility that maybe vaccines also cause other autoimmune disorders and there are studies which show that.

I have also never said that all vaccines are bad. I am saying that the number of vaccines given to children these days is absolutely ridiculous and many of them are unnecessary. I am saying that people should be aware of the possible side effects and not simply assume that vaccines are harmless....that's just not true. The pros and cons should be weighed before receiving one just as you would with any drug. I am also saying that they do not always work, as evidenced by the story posted below.

DUQUE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Dubuque school officials say skipping the measles, mumps and rubella or MMR vaccine is not to blame for the recent spread of mumps.

So far this school year, doctors diagnosed 16 students and four staff members with mumps. A total of 32 people in Dubuque County have had the illness. That accounts for half the cases in the entire state.

The school district says it seems every day doctors diagnose another student with mumps. Mumps is spread when an affected person sneezes or coughs, so the school district is strongly encouraging sick students to stay home.

School custodians are using standard protocol for cleaning school buildings, so nothing above and beyond the norm.

The state of Iowa requires all students have two MMR vaccinations. The state grants exemptions for religious and other reasons. However, the Dubuque school district says all the students who've had mumps this year have had the full vaccination.

"We know the vaccine, even when you have had both MMRs, is still only 88 percent effective. So is this just that percentage of students that have been fully vaccinated who are getting the mumps because they were the small percentage that didn't have the effective immunity?" said Rhonda Ramler, health services coordinator at the Dubuque Community School District.

Numerous studies provide compelling evidence that injected aluminum is detrimental to health. I am tired of all the nonsense we as American citizens are being fed while big business - and the government - continue to ignore the health and well-being of the fine people in this country. Why am I all fired up, you ask?

I, like everyone else, took the advice of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) - the government - and received a flu shot. I chose to receive the preservative free vaccine, thinking I did not want any thimerasol (i.e. mercury) that the "regular" flu vaccine contains.

Makes sense, right? Why would any of us want to be injected with mercury if it can potentially cause harm? However, what I did not realize is that the preservative-free vaccine contains formaldehyde.

WHAT? How can you call it preservative-free, yet still put a preservative in it? And worse yet, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Yet, here we are, being lined up like cattle and injected with an unsafe product. Within 12 hours of receiving the vaccine, I was in bed feeling miserable and missed two days of work with a terrible cough and body aches.

My anger actually stems from a constant toxic burden that is contributing to the chronic disease epidemic. And yet the government continues to talk out of both sides of its mouth. We want our citizens to be healthy and take full advantage of the best healthcare system in the world (so we think), yet we don't treat our bodies with the love and attention they deserve.

Our air, water, and food supplies are completely compromised and so it is time for us to take matters into our own hands. This year, I am committing to providing you with the educational resources to make you the best YOU. It may get confusing and frustrating at times, but stressing out over this won't help. Take three deep belly breaths and let's get started.

We live in a toxic soup. There are over 80,000 chemicals used in various industries country-wide. There are over 2,000 new chemicals being introduced annually. We breathe in these chemicals through exhaust, eat them in our processed foods ( just look at the labels that have 20 or 30 ingredients and good luck pronouncing their names), textiles (clothing, bedding, furniture), and personal care products, including make-up, deodorant, shampoos, and soaps.

Why are we so sick in 2017 despite the best access to healthcare? The body has wonderful built-in systems to help us detoxify. The liver and kidneys try to do an exceptional job keeping up with filtering out the "stuff" (toxins included) we don't need. Our skin - the largest organ in the body - will release toxins in the form of perspiration. Our breath will release toxins with each exhalation. When our gut is healthy and our microbiome (100 trillion organisms that live in our intestinal tract, within our airway, and on our skin) intact, our bowel movements help rid unwanted toxins.

I like to think of our detoxification system as a big bucket. As long as the toxic soup stays within the bucket, our body can naturally eliminate what we don't need and help us live at the highest quality of life. But what happens when the bucket starts to overflow - which is exactly what many of us have been facing our entire lives? The body may not have the capacity to eliminate our current exposures and THAT IS WHEN BAD THINGS START TO OCCUR.

Link to autism?

We must wake up and really, truly realize that we are the masters of our domain. If we don't look out for ourselves and each other, we can expect to hear about more cancers, more autism, and more auto-immune diseases. As a doctor, I should be thinking - great, this is perfect for business. I am a primary care doctor with a three month wait to get in. That is unacceptable. So YOU have to help yourself if you want me to help you.

Slight detour. Why do I mention autism now twice in this article. Because we have to wake up out of our trance and stop following bad advice. Does the vaccine burden - as has been debated for years - cause autism? I don't know and will not debate that here. What I will stand up and scream is that newborns without intact immune systems and detoxification systems are being over-burdened with PRESERVATIVES AND ADJUVANTS IN THE VACCINES.

The adjuvants, like aluminum - used to stimulate the immune system to create antibodies - can be incredibly harmful to the developing nervous system. Some of the vaccines have helped reduce the incidence of childhood communicable diseases, like meningitis and pneumonia. That is great news. But not at the expense of neurologic diseases like autism and ADHD increasing at alarming rates.

When I was in medical school in the late 1980s, the rate of autism was 1 in 1,000 children. For those born in the 1950's and 60's, do you recall a single student in your grade with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for ADHD or someone with a diagnosis of autism? I do not.

As of 2010, the rate of autism in the U.S. escalated to 1 in 68 children. The deniers will simply state that we do a better job of diagnosing this "disorder". Really? Something (s) are over-burdening our ability to detoxify, and that is when the problems begin.

So let me be clear - vaccines can be helpful when used properly. But the vaccination timing and understanding one's epigenetics (how your genes interact with the environment) are all critical to our risk of developing chronic disease. Please talk to your doctor about the optimal timing of vaccinations for your children, and therefore reduce your risk of raising a child with a neurologic complication.

For those who want to dive in further, help me understand why we vaccinate newborns for hepatitis B - a sexually transmitted disease. Any exposure to this virus is unlikely to happen before our second decade of life, but we expose our precious newborns to toxic aluminum (an adjuvant in the vaccine) at one day of life.

And when they actually need the protection, many who have received this three-shot series in the first year of life will lack antibody protection--as immunity may not last. Perhaps delaying the series until the immune system is more mature would reduce the risk of neurologic complications.

To help your family, start with yourself

My goal is to help you think about your total body burden related to toxic exposures. The more mindful you are at reading labels, thinking about what you are ingesting, and how you manage your stress will go a long way toward living a life free from chronic disease. Never assume that products are safe just because they are on a store shelf.

Together we will learn what to stay away from and what to consume. Become a voice for yourself and your family. Blind faith must become a thing of the past. And by educating your loved ones, you will actually help society reduce the chronic disease burden.

This title is misleading. Johns Hopkins didn't "weigh in". They sponsored a collection of stories that expressed differing views on vaccination.

INTRODUCTION:
We describe the pertussis epidemic, based only on confirmed whooping cough cases. We have analyzed data on the diagnosis, epidemiology and vaccine history in order to understand the factors that might explain the trends of the disease.
METHODS:
A descriptive study of the confirmed pertussis cases reported during 2011 in the Vallès region (population 1,283,000). Laboratory criteria for confirmed pertussis cases include isolation of Bordetella pertussis from a clinical specimen or detection of B. pertussis by PCR in nasopharyngeal swabs.
RESULTS:
A total of 421 pertussis confirmed cases were reported, which was the highest incidence reported in the last decade (33 cases/100,000 people/year in 2011). The highest incidence rate was among infants less than 1 year old (448/100,000), followed by children 5-9 years old (154/100,000). Pertussis cases aged 2 months-1 year were 90% vaccinated following the current DTaP schedule for their age group in Catalonia, and cases of 5-9 years were 87% fully vaccinated with 5 doses of DTaP vaccine. There were no deaths, although 8% of cases were hospitalized. Pertussis was more severe in infants, 30% required hospitalization despite having received the vaccine doses corresponding to their age. Children of 5-9 years were most often identified as primary cases in households or school clusters.
CONCLUSION:
Despite high levels of vaccination coverage, pertussis circulation cannot be controlled at all. The results question the efficacy of the present immunization programmes.

The leaflet given with the jab does not include a full list of ingredients or side effects. The sheet given to patients cites ‘headache’ as the worst side effect, but in the 4 pull-out leaflet, there are several other side effects mentioned that are life threatening.
What Exactly is in Flu Vaccines?

Formaldehyde:
Used in labs as a preservative, the long term effects have not been fully studied. A study of funeral industry workers found a link between formaldehyde and myeloid lukemia.

Octylphenol ethoxylate (Triton X-100):
Used by companies for “wetting, detergency, superior hard surface, metal cleaning and excellent emulsification” in paints, coatings, oilfield chemicals, textiles, and industrial cleaners. Studies have shown it may be detrimental to the reproductive system.

Thimerosal
Contains Mercury and is a know neurotoxin; it can cause nerve damage, and FDA knows of numerous cases of mercury poisoning caused by thimerosal.

Other ingredients in Fluzone are: sodium phosphate-buffered isotonic sodium chloride solution and gelatin
Other flu shots are made from different potentially toxic ingredients:

Monobasic sodium phosphate (MSP):
Known to cause acute phosphate nephropathy, and permanent impairment of renal functions. It has alsocaused seizures, and cardiac arrhythmias.

Dibasic sodium phosphate and monobasic potassium phosphate:
Phosphates are often used in food as preservatives, acidifying, and emulsifying agents. Has been linked to cardiovascular problems.

Potassium chloride:
Known to cause digestive problems and vomiting, but in severe cases it can lead to severe allergic reactions, chest pains, irregular heartbeat, confusion, and paralysis.

Calcium chloride:
May lead to cardiovascular issues.

Sodium taurodeoxycholate:
Have been associated to promote tumor growth, especially in pancreas, colon, and throat, studies show.

Neomycin sulfate:
In rare cases has been linked to drowsiness, loss of hearing, difficulty breathing, rash, and weakness.

Polymyxin B:
Is an antibiotic, whose side effects include neurotoxic and nephrotoxic reactions: rising blood levels, dizziness, apnea, fever, and headache.

Mercury:
A heavy metal responsible for poisoning, and damage to many organs leading to severe illnesses, includingsevere insomnia, and neurological disorders.

Beta-propiolactone
A carcinogen and a possible toxin to liver, skin, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract.

Vaccines also include canine kidney cells, monkey kidney cells and aborted fetal tissue cells.

The autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA), presented by Shoenfeld and Agmon-Levin in 2011, is an entity that incorporates diverse autoimmune conditions induced by the exposure to various adjuvants. Adjuvants are agents that entail the capability to induce immune reactions. Adjuvants are found in many vaccines and used mainly to increase the response to vaccination in the general population. Silicone has also been reported to be able to induce diverse immune reactions. Clinical cases and series of heterogeneous autoimmune conditions including systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis have been reported to be induced by several adjuvants. However, only a small number of cases of autoimmune thyroid disorder have been included under the umbrella of ASIA syndrome. Indeed, clinical cases of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and/or subacute thyroiditis were observed after the exposure to vaccines as well as silicone implantation. In our review, we aimed to summarize the current knowledge on ASIA syndrome presented as endocrinopathies, focusing on autoimmune thyroid disorders associated with the various adjuvants.

The functional doctor's whose books I read and podcasts I listen to speak about this as well. Generally, they state that genetics is such a small part of the overall picture because these diseases are only exploding within the last 100 years or so, and evolution doesn't happen that fast. So they look to explain it via many other factors.

Another interesting statistic is the rate of chronic disease in children. It's up to 15-18%. For them, they might have to live 50, 60, 70 years with it. We might have to deal with half of that. That's tragic.
