Interesting question Cindy, timely for me.
A bit over a week ago I was prescribed levothyroxine (generic Synthroid 50mcg) to try to treat some subclinical hypothyroidism. I have some annoying symptoms that I was hoping treatment might help with (TSH has risen in some recent labwork, but is not out of range yet). I was taking the medication for 1 week in the morning with a big glass of water, at least 1 hour before breakfast. I was taking my promacta at bedtime after waiting around 4 hours after eating. That gave a nice long window between the two. I ended up with some extreme bloating, headaches, and then pain in my splenectomy incision (Since my splenectomy was done so long ago, I got the huge cut). I had certainly never had anything like that happen before. I noticed swelling in that upper left abdominal quadrant and decided to stop with the levothyroxine experiment until I can get more data about potential causes for the reaction or interactions between promacta and levothyroxine.
Leaving only 1 hour after taking promacta does NOT sound like a good idea. From what I could search out, promacta (eltrombopag) is listed several places as a drug that could cause interactions with synthroid. I couldn't see any details about what sorts of effects those might be (it's not like tons of people take promacta to start with), and I'm planning on investigating further with my hematologist. Synthroid is supposed to be taken first thing in the morning at least 30 minutes before eating for ideal absorption. Are you also taking your promacta in the morning? Why do you need to take them so close together? Can't you find a way to do promacta at night so at least you could get 6-8 hours between the two?
