Paresthesia was created by nrcoach
After my first injection with N plate the left side of my face went numb as if I received a shot of Novocaine from my dentist. My Dr could not explain this and said it had nothing to do with side effects of the injection. After further research I've discovered that @ 6-8% of ITP patients over 60 of which I am, have experienced this condition with N plate. Anyone here have a similar experience? Please help. It has been 3 weeks now and i keep biting my lip and bleeding profusely (because of my low platelet count)

That sounds like it might be more than just paresthesia. Does the numb side move or droop? Have you told any doctor other than your hemo?

I have paresthesia and it came on suddenly but did not result in sudden, total numbness. I had and continue to have tingling, burning skin, and skin crawling sensations. It is very slowly causing numbness. I'm not so sure that sudden onset numbness would be paresthesia.

Have you had any injections since that one? It might be a good idea to follow up with your GP and maybe have further testing done.

The parasthesia side effect of Nplate generally means tingling of fingers and toes. I'd agree with Sandi that numbness of the face is likely to be something else and needs checking. Haematologists are not good at following up other things I've found, and they tend to leave it up to us to sort out.

I've done some research and it can be a side effect of the injection in patients over 60 yr old(me). I've seem my hemo, neurologists, had CT scan, with and w/out contrast, was treated with antibiotics, antivirals, pain meds...all with no effect except now there is no more pain just numbness on the left side of my face. Very weird....3 weeks now!

I'm glad that you've had some tests done. Don't give up on it though. Did you actually read that patients over 60 can experience total unilateral facial numbness like that, or did it just say paresthesia?

I had a molar filled today and the whole right side of my face was numb. I thought of you the entire time. It is an uncomfortable experience and I was sure glad to get the feeling back. Is yours resolving at all?

Did the neurologist agree with the paresthesia theory? I'm just not buying it, but then again I'm not a doctor.

No change in numbness...I have to either put gauze between my upper lip and gum or hold my lip out of the way when i take a bite of something. Yesterday I forgot to do this when eating a sandwich and chomped so hard it bled for 30 mins. Neurologist doesn't think paresthesia from n plate either does hemo.....they really don't have an idea. First thought of shingles virus, but I have no rash or other signs.

It sounds very upsetting and worrying. Have you had a scan?

Did they rule out Bell's Palsy? Have they mentioned an MRI? That might show more than a CT scan.

Sorry, just trying to help.

No Bell's palsy because I have complete movement, no drooping. No MRI because they have good images from the scans. I appreciate the help. Thanks
