Gosh. You seem to have had a very rocky ride so far with ITP. Here's hoping the splenectomy does the trick and you have many long years in remission.

I'm not sure why you were in hospital all that time. Did you have a lot of bleeding issues? If so, that would explain the fast ride to splenectomy.

I'm sorry you're still having post-operative problems. I'm sure someone will come along soon who has had the open surgery and will tell you how it was for them.

  • I developed hemolytic anemia in 1999 and ITP in 2005. Treatments have been splenectomy, prednisone, IVIG, and Rituxan.

What do the doctors say about that numbness? That was really a long time to be in the hospital, that is not common. I had an open splenectomy and was in the hospital for 5 days after. I felt back to normal about 4 weeks after that. I had numbness over my whole stomach during that time, it gradually got better over 6-8 weeks. Still, 10 years later I have a small line of numbness right on the scar line, so I guess that is permanent.

It took a long time (6 months or more, maybe a year) for all the residual numb spots to disappear after I had my spleen out. There are also a few spots which had icy/hot sensations for a long time.

The problem is that if a nerve is cut (which happens when they make the incisions), it takes a long time to grow back, and since nerves can service a large area, one small nerve can leave a big numb spot. The open surgery probably means a lot more nerves got cut than I had, too. My surgery was, fortunately, able to be done laparoscopically.

It all eventually went away. It was just a minor annoyance after a while. A LOT better than messing around with Dr.'s appointments and medications for platelets. :-)
