I am 64 years old I worry every day about my ipt returning ,do you know of any research on age and ipt . I have had ipt twice .I had a accessory spleen, my counts are normal now.I had heard that after a accessory spleen you can stay in remission for about 3 years is that true?

Joyce:

ITP can always recur, but if you are in remission, please don't spend your time worrying about it. If it would come back, you'd manage it and you'd be okay. Cross that bridge if you come to it and in the meantime, just live your life happily, okay?

I'm in remission and honestly, I rarely give it a thought. If it comes back, I'll survive it.

There is no time limit that I am aware of regarding remission after removal of an accessory spleen.

I think the more you worry and stress about it coming back, then you have a higher chance of it coming back, so just try to relax and not worry too much about it. If it comes back, then you just deal with it the best way you can, but there is no point stressing yourself out and putting yourself at risk of heart attacks etc worrying about something that hasn't even happened yet.

Hi
I had two spleen operations done and been in remission now for 8 years. Though at first they did drop periodically. So yes it can be true that platelets drop after three years but it is also true they may never drop again. They may drop and you don't know about it and recover by themselves. Which I reckon happens to quite a lot of people at times. ITP is more common than we think. Just htat people have different 'low levels' of bleeding symptoms. Mine has to get right down to 5 before I get the rash. That is my sign. For all I know right now they could be still 37 - last known test or they could be which is more likely - to be 300+

I know it is I tempting to worry about it at first and there has been times I convinced they have dropped. Every time I have gone through they have been higher than the annual check up itself - which coincidently I have to keep my on the openward system we have in UK, allowing me to ring the ward direct any time of day an night whenever symptoms or questions appear.

So as with other advice, I think you might need to find a hobby meaningful to you which will allow your brain to stop dwelling on ITP too much. Some of us has been there. Almost willing the platlets to drop so 'I' know exactly where I am with the platelet level.

Age - I believe you are quite young these days! What are you not so good at? I have never been good at Maths and have just started (again - I will add) Maths at and adult education centre. Am 43 but am doing it to occupy my brain a bit more because I have a habit of watching for every change in my body - as a result of having septicaemia - but I want to relax and get on with things. Learn the lesson I learned well at childhood, take each day quite literally as it comes and believe me - that was my coping method as was born with a hole in the heart and surgery etc. Its a pity as adults we cannot live for the day. Seize the day and all that stuff.

You will write back saying you are too old perhaps, but I don't think you are. There is a lot happening for older people in England and we are behind the times. You got access to the internet by the looks of it. Plan your own website etc....

and yes as people say, we can I believe 'will-it' to happen to us. I think I almost did that this summer as was involved in a play and thought of it was my way out of escaping the play. I didn't get it in time to get out of the play but two weeks later. (Coincidence or abused willpower?) So we have the choice. Do we want it to happen - or do we not want it to happen? Just a bit of food for thought and a lesson on the mind there.
