18 Year Old diagnosed with ITP was created by destin92
My 18 year old daughter was diagnosed with ITP in May 2010. She went to the doctor in May because she had a very large bruise to appear on her hip. Ran CBC and her platelet level was 31000. Since that time they have stayed between 45000 and 56000. CBC done yesterday shows her level at 50000. Doctor wants to do another CBC next week and if they are the same put her on prednisone. My concern is that I've read many times after stopping prednisone the levels drop. Please give me your thoughts. As a mother I have been so worried the past few months. This site has truly been helpful.

Hi Destin - I know you are worried, that's a normal response. Your daughter's counts are really not all that bad and I'd question treating at that level unless she has bleeding symptoms. Prednisone can be quite nasty for most and yes, counts can drop back down to pre-treatment levels after tapering it. Counts can also hold and a person can go into remission, but there is no way to know. Some people don't respond to Prednisone at all and end up with side effects for nothing. It's a tough decision, but most of us wouldn't treat at those counts.

Thanks for your response. She really has no symptoms at this time other than she bruises easily. Her gums aren't bleeding, monthly cylce is normal so the only physical change is easily bruising. I am so thankful I found this site.

I too would be very cautious and slow to use the drug pred. My Doc put me on it in Jan..my counts were at 53,000 to see if pred would boost them to 100 or up. I had a reversal reaction and my counts went down to 13. I felt very sick for 6 weeks and it took lots of work to get off the drug quickly. They good part of it all I found this web site, talked in person to someone, found a new hemotologist that was wise and slow to jump on the med band wagon. My counts are back to the 50 and seem to hover there. I do not have the energy I had pre ITP but I would rather stay here and treat this audio immune desease naturally then try all the risky meds that most have proven don't work. Research and Research before making any decisions. Good luck.

I wouldn't say that "most have proven the treatments don't work". They can and do work, but the response and length of duration differs for everyone.
