colds bringing down platelet count

Hi everyone,
my husband had rituxan infusions Jan.2011. His platelets have been stable since. At the last CBC his platelets were 285. He developed a cold, his doctor had him recheck his platelets 6 days later and the platelets went down to 257. It looks like his doctor thinks it hasn't effected his platelets.
I just wanted to ask all of you, what has been your experience regarding colds and platelet level.
Is a 28 drop within 6 days anything to worry about?
It has been such a roller coaster before rituxan, so I guess I am still on "edge" a bit. Also we are planning a trip to see my parents in Germany in June.
Thanks everyone, this forum has been a great comfort, I really appreciate all the sharing of stories and all the great advice.

I think at those levels a 28k drop is normal fluctuation and nothing at all to worry about. Supposedly the counts are only accurate plus or minus 10k so those numbers are barely different. Also, those who have a full remission from Rituxan (normal counts) are very likely to have a sustained remission (of multiple years).

There are many on the board whose counts are affected by colds and such - but some have counts that drop and others have counts that rise! My theory is it depends on the mechanism behind your ITP, what really causes it in your body. Personally my counts are not affected by colds.

Pretty soon you'll only be checking monthly, won't that be nice?

Rita:

I agree with Erica 100%. Counts are not always affected by an illness. Even if they are, platelets can rebound on their own without treatments. I had counts like your husband after Rituxan and my counts dropped into the 60's twice, but went up both times without any help.

A drop of 28k isn't anything to worry about. Counts rise and drop constantly, that's normal. It's only a problem when you see a definite trend in drops that continues.
