A quick update. was created by shen08
Hey, hope everyone is well.

I had haematologist this morn, was a bit more informative than previous visits as I was her first appointment. My platelet count is 17 so its nto coming down as fast now.
She explained why it is probably a primary infection of CMV and that some enzymes that were high in the liver function test are on the way back to normal (shes been saying that from i first met her am yet to hear that they are normal)

my globulin level is high she said this is due to virus but getting test for virus next week to se if it is still the case. Trying to get me off pred quite quick so my body can fight virus off and its a case of waiting to see if the platelets raise themselves. I have dropped from 30mg to 10 mg pred, with the back up of IVIG if needed.

Doc said my shaking and the pains I am having are all due to the pred. She didnt give me any advice on the insomnia or the dizzy spells though!!! Oh well. It is the not knowing that is frustrating, but patience is a virtue.

Oh and I found out that the painkiller i would normally use (brufen) is not recommended with the low platelets, its a good job I did not just assume and take them. I have heard in passing gps mention that a platelet count as low as 4 due to a virus is unusual so I am not getting my hopes up too much.

So i am happy with the platelets today they were 24 last week am hoping they slow down a bit more though. So no ground breaking stuff but I am optimistic and able bodied.

Anyone know much about adults having that low of platelets caused by a virus?

Not much to tell about having low platelets as the result of a virus. It's difficult to prove, even if low platelets are a usual symptom of the illness. Some people go back to normal after the virus and some become chronic. My hemo even had low counts (60's) once when he was sick. His counts rebounded quickly after he got better. I think a lot of times, people get sick and their counts go down but they never know it because they don't have a CBC. I'm sure it happens way more than anyone knows.

I acquired ITP when I had a nasty cold. It turned out to be chronic, so getting over the cold didn't make a difference for me. Anything can happen with you though, so keep hoping!

Shen, it's not just ibuprofen you need to stay away from, it's all NSAIDs. I've learned to always ask anytime my Dr perscribes meds b/c even though he knows I have ITP my GP sometimes forgets to look to see if what he's giving might change clotting or platelet counts.
