Hello everyone. i was recently diagnoised with ITP and when I told my hematologist that my husband and I were going to start trying to get pregnant in the next couple months she told me to find a high risk obgyn. Is this always needed? My platelets are always around 80,000-90,000 and I am on no treatment. And I am confused between the difference between a high risk ob and a neonatologist, as the neonatologist is what I keep finding in my searches. Any info would be appreciated.

You do need special care as the platelet count can do odd things during pregnancy. It may fall and you will then need to treat. It may not in which case no problem.

My understanding is that a neonatologist deals with newborn babies after they are born, you need someone to see you during the pregnancy.

Angela - to be on the safe side, a high risk OB-GYN should be consulted. They would be more familiar with what to do if your counts dropped. There are a few different ways to manage it. Hopefully, your counts will stay the same or go up, but you never know.
