Hello Cara. Welcome to the boards. I don't think ITP is hereditary. Do you or your husband have it? I think autoimmune diseases have a tendancy to "run" in families. I'm not sure though. Is everyone healthy other wise?

My sister and I have both had it. It's not exactly hereditary, but if the autoimmune predisposition is there, it's possible to have multiple family members with ITP. Unusual though.

There are hereditary types of platelet disorders and those can be tested.

I was just coming on here to ask the exact same question. My 3yr son Dale was dx in oct 08 although suspected to have it much earlier than that. My nearly 2 yr son Ryan is now showing the exact same symtoms that were notice in the months before Dale dx. Eczema around the face increased bruising and minor blood nose. I'm worried about getting him tested as we are still on the platelet rollercoaster with Dale nothing over 50 although on the up side we haven't had any drops below 20 for over 12 mnths. (touch wood).

Michelle.

Michelle - read the link that I posted above. There is a type of thrombocytopenia where eczema is also a symptom.

2 of my triplets(4yrs) has auto immune ds (ITP & Nephrotic synd) so yes auto immune ds are heridetary & comes in various forms.

I know how hard it is dealing with 2 auto-imm ds.As i write this both my kids have it(my son's nephortic syn is back(he was in remission for 1 yr) & he's on steroids while my daughter ITP is on "wait & watch" approach at 60K)

My son was diagnosed when he was 18 months old in April 2007 and my husband was diagnosed shortly thereafter at 32 while the doctors started digging around to see what was going on. We were told that ITP isn't Hereditary but it obviously is and in my opinion everything is Hereditary. They decided to test my daughter too and she is negative for ITP. We've done bone marrow tests and DNA tests on both my husband and son and all that comes back is ITP.

Shelley - It's the predisposition to autoimmune disorders that is hereditary, not the ITP itself. As I said above, my sister and I have both had it, but neither of my parents did. As far as I know, there hasn't been any autoimmune problems until me and my sisters. I have had eczema, ITP and Lupus. My sister has had acute ITP. My other sister has Discoid Lupus. My daughter has asthma, Graves Disease and eczema. Once the autoimmune ball starts rolling, it can affect family members in different ways. If there is a disorder that is common in two family members, it's mainly coincidence (unless it is one of the hereditary types of ITP in the link above).
