12 Month Old Daughter Just Diagnosed

We have been in the hospital with our daughter the past couple days with our 12 month old daughter due to ITP. Her count was below 6,000 when we were admitted on Tuesday and they gave her one round of the IVIG. She is currently now at 38,000. This is really new to us and for me extremely scary. My question really is how hard do they have to fall or hit their head to be really concerned? My poor daughter is learning how to walk and falls down every so often, more when she's tired. I don't want to hover over 24/7 catching her when she falls, but at the same time I'm terrified she is going to do some major damage with her platelets that low.

My daughter was older when she developed ITP, but I've been reading these boards for the past 9 years or so. Some of the parents of toddlers invest in a helmet, others pad hardwood floors with those foam puzzle mats and cover furniture corners with other foam shapes--packing materials? or cut a swim noodle to cover bars and such. A gate for the stairs, of course. At the playground, many parents follow the 'feet on the ground' rule, but right now, you likely won't have to worry so much about that as calming down rowdy uncles or the family dog. I'm sure the docs told you that your daughter's ITP is probably temporary--little ones are much more likely to remit within a year or so. Meanwhile, there is lots of info here, so read, read, read!

My own daughter was riding horses at 50K and up, so 30K is pretty much out of the danger zone. Has your daughter had any active bleeding? It gets better as you know more, but understand that we call ITP the 'roller coaster'. Both counts and your emotions! I'm sure others will chime in! Ann, Caitlin's (23) Mom
