15 year old boy recently diagnosed

Hello. So glad to find this group. Full of so much information. Here is my 15 year old sons story. He was diagnosed with kidney disease at 5 years old. He has been in remission for 8 years. The itp was discovered at the end of Dec during a routine kidney check. His platlets were at 70k. He has been checked weekly and his counts have been 71k, 64k, 48k(very sick with virus, 101k, 85k, 70k, 50k, 70k, and 64k. The dr tells us this is mild and is taking a watch and wait approach. She and his kidney specialist believe that one has nothing to do with the other. He had pneanmonia in late November. She said it may be acute or chronic but is leaning to chronic. She said it may clear up in many months or many years. We are constantly being told not to worry. This is very hard on him. He is the varsity goalie on his hockey team and is hoping to be ready to play in Oct. I would appreciate any thoughts or advice. Could this get worse after 2 months of ok numbers? Thank you.

It could go either way at this point, but hopefully, the numbers will go up. There is nothing you can or should do at this point but wait. I know it's frustrating, but it is better than having very low numbers and having to treat.

It's a long way off until October. I wouldn't worry yet. Also, his count may not have to be normal to play hockey, but they will have to be safe. His doctor can determine what a safe count would be...usually 75k is good for most sports.

Thank you for the reply. Believe me I am thrilled that this is looking like it may be mild. I am so thankful as I read some of these posts about how low the numbers can go! We are certainly lucky that no treatment is required! But my son does not agree. This is the end of the world to him! We are constantly reminding him how blessed he is!
Today his count was 66k. So we have 3 weeks in a row with stable numbers. I imagine that could be a good sign that it is not bouncing all over!
His dr wants him at 90,000 to play hockey, and you are right oct is a long way away!

Hi -- just saying hi since you are new and sending you best wishes. It can be very scary at the beginning of this ride. I hope his numbers come up on their own as you "wait and see." They well could and, as Sandi says, better to wait and see, as hard as it is, then to have to treat. I've usually heard, and we were told, that above 50 was good enough for just about anything but probably because he is goalie (awesome!) they might need to be higher. Here's hoping they are temporarily down. that happened actually to my brother (age 60) -- he has diabetes 1 (so another a/i disease) -- and last year, for about 2 months, his platelets plummeted. Then suddenly they were back up and have stayed up. No one has any idea why! I'm hoping the same for your son. Good luck.

Thank you for the encouragement! He has been hovering in the mid 60s for 5 weeks. Drs are very happy he is leveling off. What is your story?
