My son's count was at 5,000 & he had a treatment of IVIg and his count went to 32,000. Is this any indicator of weather or not they will drop again? The Dr's were amazed at how well he responded.

Thanks,
Rhonda

Hello, ITP in children, especially young children of your son's age, is usually acute and the count will right itself in a few weeks or months. The IVIG is just to keep the count up until then. It only ever lasts a few weeks at most so here's hoping the ITP disappears in that time.

A count of 32 after IVIG is a good start but it's not a great response yet. The count should go much higher in the next few days. You should also know that it's becoming more common not to treat children with ITP at all unless they have bleeding (blood in the urine etc) so don't worry too much about the low counts.

My 4 yr old son has been dealing with ITP since January 2012. His ivig treatments usually keep him in the safe range for about 4 weeks. So since January he gets ivig every 4 - 5 weeks.

I hope it clears up for your son soon.

My wife and I are now entering our 6th week since being rushed to the ER. Our son, 2 years and 9 months right now, was at 2k. IVIG treament brought him up to 31k, 10 days later we were back at 8k. Bone Marrow biopsy and Pred treatment starter. 3 days later 21k, but 7 days later 15k. 7 days after that 48k. 7 days after that back down to 17k. We are now to begin a week with NO steroids and I am not holding on to much hope that his count with stay stable.

Luckily his symptoms are easy to spot, bruising and petechia very noticible when he goes below under 10k and I actually called yesterday's count at 16-18k (came in at 17) and Dr. seemed impressed. Anyway we are supposed to watch with increased vigilance this week til our next blood test on the 27th.

If and when this thing is past...if I ever EVER complain about anything in life, anyone reading this has permission to drive over and punch me in the face.

A couple of plusses from the last 6 weeks as well.

1) A new found feeling towards science and what we really know....I mean how the heck are we putting stuff on mars when we dont even know what and why ITP starts and stops.

2)Lost 25 lbs. No diet in the world like anxiety.
