IVIG length of effectiveness???? was created by 5kidsmom
My 6 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with suspected ITP, after excessive bruising we made a trip to the Ped. Dr...her platelets were at 15,000 and the next day at 5,000. We were sent to childrens hospital for hemo/onocology. Even though we have multiple lymphnodes that are shotty and constantly have a temp of 99 to 99.8 the hemo dr diagnosed her with suspected ITP. She had the IVIG infusion, platelets came up to 49,000 overnight, 8 days into treatment we were at 163,000 however 10 days from the infusion we were back to 110,000 and are now at 72,000 three days later. I was curious about how well the IVIG has worked for others, my daughter had NONE of the side effects that so many have with IVIG. And being new to this suspected ITP, i wanted to ask if any others have times when their platelets hold at a certain level or rise on their own. I am getting a second opinion from St. Judes, I'm an RN and this worries me beyond belief as I'm sure it has and does anyone who has a child going through this.

Hello. The length of time that IVIG lasts can be different for everyone. For some people it lasts a few days, for some a few weeks. That is an average response. Very few go months, but it does happen once in a while. Some get no response at all.

Yes, platelets can stabilize or rise on their own. There is no way to predict when or why that might happen.

Good luck with your second opinion. I hope all goes well. Please keep us updated.

Yes IvIg doesnt last long for the most part...i have a 14 yr/o daughter and she usually only last 12 to 14 days...one time her platelets were up to 456k and within 7 days she dropped to 2k....please let us know how your second opinion went....my daughter is scheduled to have retuximab this week...they are gonna put a pic line in her so they wont have to poke her anymore....i feel so bad about that....but anyway...i hope your daughter is getting better and i hope your second opinion goes well....tina
