It is totally possible for someone's count to go down to 0. I personall have been at 1. As far as treatment, I really can't say for a baby, but I know for grown-ups they usually start treatment at anything below 20 or 30.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

My son was 10 when he was dx and he was at zero for 3 months. At what level you choose how and to treat will depend on symptoms and your comfort level.

I (adult) experienced zero and hope not to see that again unless there are digits in front of it. It was scary and I was unresponsive to several Rx. But as you can see, we did get it under control.

Blessings of enough...
Faith to trust our Lord
Joy to share with others
Strength to help the weak
Love to share with the hurting

I have been at 2 and that was pretty bad, never want to go there again.

Hi there,

We've been dealing with ITP for 3 months. My son has been "fine" at counts of 3k, 5k, 7k 13k, etc. By fine I mean petichiae and some minor bruising, but no other bleeding. Our doc is treating his condition, not the count. It is hard and frustrating and ups and downs and as you know difficult with a toddler, but he was "ok" at those counts.

My son was diagnosed at 18 months and we were told they wouldn't treat him unless he went below 10, he never did so we didn't do anything he came up on his own and hangs around 120/130. We were given a few options and we decided a transfusion of platelets would be where we would start but like I said we never got there, he is almsot 6 now and doing great!

good luck!

Platelet transfusions are not a good way to treat ITP. Usually, they don't work very well because the body just destroys them as it does its own platelets. They are used in emergency situations when there is a lot of bleeding that can't be controlled. Also, you can become sensitized to them. meaning that you can no longer use them, so they're best saved for emergencies.

I received platelets once when I was first diagnosed. I was in the emergency room and the platelets were ordered by the ER doctor who, I am sure didn't know much about ITP. I am quite sure that my hematologist would not have prescribed them.

I think that IVIG or WinRho are the best medications for children. They have side effects, but their side effects are not long term like some of the other drugs.
