hi my son has ITP he was diag. at the beganing of january. We did a blood drive at his school lately and i got a letter in the mail today saying MY EIA TEST WAS REACTIVE AND RIPA TEST WAS POSITIVE I HAD T. CRUZI ANTIBODY IN MY BLOOD WHICH LEADS TO CHAGAS DISEASE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ANY OF THAT MEANS YET BUT MY QUESTION CAN THERE BE A CONNECTION BETWEEN MINE AND MY SON'S ITP. ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN HELP LET ME KNOW.

It wouldn't be connected unless your son is infected too. Then there might be a reason for his drop in platelets.

I donated blood today and asked about Chagas disease, since that's in one of the questions they always ask. The lady taking my history said it's a germ carried by an insect in South American countries, mostly, and once you have it, it doesn't go away. It does knock you out as a potential blood donor, except, maybe to yourself. She didn't say what kind of insect... Doesn't sound like you could pass it on, but it is possible your son was in the same place? But I don't know if it can result in ITP, either. I'm with Gretchen--give it a Bing!
