Question for Canadians was created by Sandi
My husband would like to know why the Montreal team is named "Habs"?

'Cause they're 'Habs' been? Sorry, I'm not a big fan of the "Canadie bums" as I call them. Seriously tho, I'm not sure, they've just always been called that for as long as I can remember. I'm hoping that they lose in this next round. I was hoping they'd go down against the Pens, but that didn't work out too well!

I hope someone can answer your husband's question, Sandi.

According to NHL.com, the first man to refer to the team as "the Habs" was American Tex Rickard, owner of the Madison Square Garden, in 1924. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the "H" on the Canadiens' sweaters was for "Habitants."

Could that be it?

I found this:

"Habs is an abbreviation of "les habitants," the informal name given to the original settlers of New France, dating back to the 17th Century. So it's a natural fit for the The Montreal Canadiens, established in 1909 and marketed as a French-Canadian hockey team."

I'm not a sports lover except for formula 1 and the programme for that is on now. :)

According to "Answers.com", it's because before they were called the Canadiens, they were called the "Habitants". My dad's still asleep, I think, or else I would call him; he's been a fan forever.

Ann is right, "Habs" is short for "Les Habitants". Don't know about the rest of it, but that's what my dad told me when I asked him.
