Just joking on blaming the thyroid for weight gain - I know that isn't the reason. However I do think I am the only one at Curves [ www.curves.com/ ] who has gained weight instead of losing it :(

I like Quinoa - have a salad recipe for it I'll try to find for you Sandi.

I hear you Melinda, I walk my bum off but my bum just isn't cooperating :-). I was talking with a friend yesterday who is waiting to have her thyroid removed and she said " the dr told her its nothing, just take a pill and there will be no difference" mmm I don't agree.

Melinda, let me know if you find the recipe.

Milly, unreal that a doctor would say that! People struggle horribly with thyroid problems. Grrrrrr! I want to bite him!

Good luck to your daughter, Sandi.

I just recently got back on my thyroid meds; I had been off them a couple of months because I wanted to be retested. My doctor called me two days later and told me to get in to see him. My results were bad. I didn't get the number, doc just said it was bad. I know some of my weight gain was due to being off the meds, but not all of it. I have to get my thyroid tested in a couple of weeks to see if my dosage needs to be upped or cut back.

Yeah, it seems like the two most common things that go along with ITP are autoimmune thyroid disorders and Lupus. Lucky us!

I developed my thyroid problems a long time ago; almost 17 years. I was diagnosed with ITP in 2004 after a hysterectomy.

That's what my endocrinologist implied too, just take a pill. HA!

Now so you don't go into a tailspin Sandi ;) - my stepsister takes thyroid replacement hormones and she hardly ever goes out of the normal range. My friend has been taking the same dose of synthroid for many many years.

I think what screwed me up was when I went hypoT I was put on synthroid - a couple years later when we had to switch to the HMO they put me on the generic. Nothing wrong with the generic - however I had read on one of my cat discussion groups that once the cat is put on a thyroid med don't let the vet change the brand, I was thinking that would apply to humans too but when I questioned the HMO pharmacy doctor I was told no problem.

Fastforward a couple years, not good years when it came to my thyroid, and it finally hit me the brand of my med had been changed and problems started. My endo and I discussed this and she agreed - she went to bat for me and talked to the powers that be and I was switched back to synthroid and pay the cost of the generic.

So once you are started on a brand of med, whether brand name or generic, don't let them change it!

Oh Milly - menopause, I'm glad I'm through it but it isn't kind to the body either is it

Mine is dead, I have Graves. My thyroid trouble came after a severe bout with the real flu [some people have a cold and say they have the flu that's why I'm clarifying and saying "real" :) ] - was that a factor, I don't know. This was about 14 years after ITP diagnose.

That's really interesting Melinda about the medication, I take thyroxine that is what it is called in Australia, but there are two different " brands" so maybe that is why my levels are all over the place.

Sandi don't panic about your daughter she will be fine.

I have had thyroid trouble for over thirty years, at first they removed part of my thyroid when I was 23, all went well until three years ago when ITP came along and three months after I was diagnosed with ITP I had thyroid and para thyroid problems so end result I have no thyroid and only 3 parathyroid glands.

They now think I had ITP at a very young age as well, I was admitted to hospital when I was 4 with bleeding problems but no one ever explained why.... Fast forward 48 years and back again

Thanks guys. I'm not quite panicked, just concerned. The problem is that even though the thyroid is destroyed, either removed or RAI, the body can still produce those darn antibodies. Holli has always had a lot of them and I'm worried that they will attack. Just like when you remove the spleen, the antibodies don't stop. The med she is on can control the antibodies somewhat, so stopping that could make matters worse in that regard. Finding the correct dose of Synthroid (or whatever drug they choose) is my secondary worry.

I'll start worrying next Wednesday. I'm ok right now. B)

It does seem like many people on here do have thyroid problems. Unfortunately, when your immune system does not like you, ( sorry for the teacher terms) it effects many things. In my case it effects my thyroid and platelets.:(

Hi Everyone!
Hope all you Mothers had a Happy Mother's Day!

Sandy, your daughter will do just fine (is she the one who is a nurse?). I too, had thyroid problems from the age of 15 through 35 years old. Then one day (I mentioned before on an earlier thread), my doctor decided to try taking me off since I had severe insomnia and a fast heart beat from the anxiety (and an underactive thyroid). He took me off one pill the one year and then tested me--then the next year he took me off completely. Ever since, I keep testing normal. But, I, too, do exercise a lot which could be the reason it's been normal?

Sandy, you might try swimming for your form of exercise; I do swim twice a week and it's good if you have certain types of problems.

DeeDee:

Well how perfect! Summer is almost here and I have a pool. This will be my first summer ever that I wasn't working, so I can probably get daily exercise. I do have to limit sun exposure though, but I'll figure it out. I'll have to look up some good water exercises. You're right, it would be beneficial.

I'm beginning to suspect that I have a thyroid problem too. I know it's enlarged (showed up on a scan in December). I have been shaking a lot, sweating more then ever, heart pounding, insomnia, gaining weight, anxiety, short tempered, etc. I just asked my Rheumatologist on Friday to run a full thyroid panel including antibodies, so I guess I'll find out this week. I could be wrong, maybe it's just stress, but there isn't anything unusual going on to be that stressed about.

My daughter is an anesthesia tech. She's starting nursing school in January. Since she works in an OR, she knows all the things that can go wrong which is why she's apprehensive. She just told me some horror stories today that made my head spin around.

Happy Mother's Day to you too!

Sandi do get that thyroid checked as it can make you feel really bad, I also recommend that you get your blood calcium levels checked, I had high blood calcium and that was a parathyroid tumour, symptoms are similar to thyroid but the longer you have it the more damage it can do.

I am glad I didn't hear the horror stories before I had mine done, I would have panicked as well.

I have a pool and it is great to exercise in, but be careful of the sun.

Milly - my daughter's calcium is slightly high right now. They are hoping it drops after the surgery. Mine has always been fine. It's tested every 4 months with my metabolic panel.

Sandi, you have to really watch that, my calcium levels got so high it was causing stroke like symptoms, couldn't remember my address, dob and was a mess, body aches, drepression. Because I had to wait to get my parathyroid removed I had to go to hospital to have an infusion to clear it. It is really a terrible thing that not a lot of people know about.

The article is about low calcium....yours was high?

Holli also has low D and has been told to take Magnesium. I hope this thyroid removal helps in all of those areas. I'll have to ask if they are going to look at her parathyroid also.

This could explain a lot of her symptoms. It's good to know that we may be getting the problem resolved so her quality of life can improve. :)

Sounds very scary, Milly!

Sandi,

I will ask her about it, but I know my sister has to take a lot calcium after the thyroid was removed. They also ended up taking the parathyroid out as well. I think her other levels have been ok though.

Holli still has her parathyroids, but we don't know how well they will function since the surgery. Surgeon said sometimes they are damaged or bumped during surgery and don't recover. She is taking calcium just in case, and so far has no symptoms of low calcium. She starts Synthroid today. Moving forward and I hope she can get stable quickly!
