i have had mouth ulcers for 7 straight weeks went to doctor when I first got them gave me magic mouthwash use this should be gone in 2 to 6 days now going on 7 straight weeks tonight they are absolutely the worse they have ever been I have dealt with pain before but nothing on the scale I have had to deal with lately. They are on gums, cheeks, tongue and lips with lips being the most painful. Doctors are stumped. They have tried several things nothing has even phased them. My pain level tonite is 9 and a half easily. They are completely and totally destroying my life. I had ITP about 2 years ago I am 54 years old and wondering if ITP could be behind this astrocity. Help I am dying here.

Have you seen a Rheumatologist? Might want to start there.

Is it possible to have shingles inside your mouth?

This sounds awful - I'm sorry! It doesn't sound like anything to do with ITP though.

I had the worst canker sore I've ever had on the side of my toungue 2 weeks before I got diagnosed with ITP. It was gone before the petechia showed up, but the Hematologists said they could not rule out a connection. It could be the virus that causes canker sores triggered ITP or the fight against the virus caused my immune system to get over active and made a mild case of undetected ITP into a symptomatic case. It seems that there are many types and causes of ITP. One type might be caused by an immune response to viruses or might be triggered by the same things that trigger canker sores to develop. It is all speculation, but I do think it's possible that mouth sores and at least one type of ITP might be linked in some way.

Actually, I had a bad canker sore on one of my tonsiles before diagnosis. I have had them before but not there or that bad. Felt like a sore throat. I could see the lil crater on the tonsile. Might be what triggered ITP. I found a good mouth rinse for mouth sores. Orajel anteseptic mouth sore rinse. I found it works great. Acts like hydrogen peroxide plus a little spendier, but it does not taste as bad as straight peroxide. Really helps with the pain and usually disappears in a few days!!!!! :woohoo:
There have been times I have had a couple on my tongue and one on the inside of my cheek. Depending on the location of the canker, it can be a real "Pain" to just talk!!!
Now what do you suppose triggers Canker sores?
Speculation, but it makes sense Dave.

kaptinkop, have you had your Platelets checked??

I used to have a serious problem with canker sores. They would get so bad, I would have a hard time talking. This was at a time when I was lecturing a large classroom of physics students 3 times a week.

About a decade after the canker sores started appearing, I developed psoriasis. Then, once the psoriasis got under control, I noticed that, coincidentally, I wasn't getting canker sores any more. It took me a while to really notice it (one doesn't pay so much attention to things which aren't annoying you).

I now suspect that these sores were a manifestation of psoriasis. In retrospect, it's annoying I had to live with them as long as I did, since they were really painful. Do you happen to also have psoriasis (which, like ITP, is autoimmune)?

Do you have ulcers or canker sores? Two different things. Ulcers are white bumps.

I had a patient last year with something similar sounding-it was exceedingly painful, and nothing was helping her, either. Apparently, it took a good many doctors and tests before anyone was able to give her a diagnosis. They called it a “BENIGN MUCOUS MEMBRANE PEMPHIGOID". Apparently it is also an auto-immune disease, and will eat the mucous membranes away, also eventually spreading down the esophagus and all through the alimentary canal, to the anus. At present, like most auto-immune diseases, they have no cure, but can only manage it. Dapsone and Prednisone are two common drugs used to manage it, but they'll often cause other undesirable effects, as you probably already know.

And, for my patient, they weren't really helping with the pain, which was really unbearable. I know her doctors were doing everything they could, were very compassionate, yet nothing was helping. I was able to find her a homeopathic remedy that seems to be helping her, and her symptoms have almost disappeared completely. That is something that needs to be chosen on an individual basis.

But, because neither of us could meet for over a week, I did have her pick up a tube of this homeopathic toothpaste to give her some immediate relief. Although it didn't cure the problem, she did report that the pain was greatly lessened. My environmental dentist carries it and recommends it to all of his patients, as he's seen very good results with it. You can do a search and find many online sites that carry it. Personally, I like the taste of it, how well it lathers up and that it leaves my mouth feeling clean and fresh (I HATE most natural toothpastes-can't stand te cloying taste they usually leave!). I find it's good when someone has very sensitive teeth, tends to frequent cankor sores or gums that bleed easily.
It's somewhat pricey ($12-$15/tube), but you really only need a tiny dot of it, as it foams up so well, and mine has lasted an incredibly long time. Anyway, no matter what your diagnosis, this may help to relieve the pain. And, you might want to ask your doctors about this other auto-immune disease, too

Dear April thank-you for the suggestions Its kinda funny I have been diagnosing myself and Pemphigoid is one I asked doc about and was told it was very rare so thjey did not think so ??? Also Behcet Disease and Lichen Planus they said maybe a severe case of a herpetic form of aphthous ulcers. Anyway not sure where you live or whatever but they are sending me to the North Carolina School of Dentistry to work with the Pathology department to see If they can get to the bottom of this. I also have a baseball size bruise from a sim[ple insulin injection in my arm which concerns me about my ITP I had 2 years ago and If it is related to this at all. They are going to give me a blood test to check my platelets. Going on 8 weeks now and like sands thru the hourglass so are the days of my life
